- _v_l_a_n is a library to interface an IRIS workstation with video devices
- (e.g. tape decks) via the V-LAN transmitters and receivers from
- Videomedia, Inc. This optional hardware is required for operation of the
- library and tools described here.

- A basic VLAN setup requires the following equipment:
-
-
- o a SGI IRIS(tm) computer with a spare RS-232 serial port;
-
- o a Videomedia V-LAN-T transmitter box;
-
- o a video tape recorder (VTR);
-
- o a Videomedia V-LAN-R receiver box for that make and model of VTR.
-
- Note that you may actually have up to 15 VTRs connected; each VTR
- requires its own V-LAN-R receiver box, but only one V-LAN-T transmitter
- is required.
-
- To connect up the above equipment:
-
- Connect the RS-232 port on the Iris workstation to the V-LAN-T. This
- uses a standard serial cable.
-
- Connect the V-LAN-T to the V-LAN-R. This uses a standard video cable
- with a BNC connector on both ends.
-
- Terminate the connection between the V-LAN-T and the V-LAN-R with a
- standard 75-ohm terminator at the V-LAN-R end. (If multiple V-LAN-R
- units are to be used, the second unit should be connected instead; the
- network should only be terminated at the last receiver box).

-
- Connect the V-LAN-R to the VTR. This connection depends on the make
- and model of deck.
-
- Connect the station video reference source to the V-LAN-T. This must
- be the same reference that is fed to the VTR.
-
- Connect the TC OUT (time code output) of the deck to the TC IN of the
- V-LAN-R. (This connection is not required for all types of VTR).
-
- Connect power to the V-LAN-T and V-LAN-R units.
-
- The above connections should result in an operational V-LAN network.
