  12.      _v_l_a_n is a library to interface an IRIS workstation with video devices
  13.      (e.g.  tape decks) via the V-LAN transmitters and receivers from
  14.      Videomedia, Inc.  This optional hardware is required for operation of the
  15.      library and tools described here.

  31.      A basic VLAN setup requires the following equipment:

  34.         o a SGI IRIS(tm) computer with a spare RS-232 serial port;
  35.  
  36.         o a Videomedia V-LAN-T transmitter box;
  37.  
  38.         o a video tape recorder (VTR);
  39.  
  40.         o a Videomedia V-LAN-R receiver box for that make and model of VTR.
  41.  
  42.      Note that you may actually have up to 15 VTRs connected; each VTR
  43.      requires its own V-LAN-R receiver box, but only one V-LAN-T transmitter
  44.      is required.
  45.  
  46.      To connect up the above equipment:
  47.  
  48.         Connect the RS-232 port on the Iris workstation to the V-LAN-T. This
  49.         uses a standard serial cable.
  50.  
  51.         Connect the V-LAN-T to the V-LAN-R. This uses a standard video cable
  52.         with a BNC connector on both ends.
  53.  
  54.         Terminate the connection between the V-LAN-T and the V-LAN-R with a
  55.         standard 75-ohm terminator at the V-LAN-R end. (If multiple V-LAN-R
  56.         units are to be used, the second unit should be connected instead; the
  57.         network should only be terminated at the last receiver box).

  74.         Connect the V-LAN-R to the VTR. This connection depends on the make
  75.         and model of deck.
  76.  
  77.         Connect the station video reference source to the V-LAN-T. This must
  78.         be the same reference that is fed to the VTR.

  80.         Connect the TC OUT (time code output) of the deck to the TC IN of the
  81.         V-LAN-R. (This connection is not required for all types of VTR).

  83.         Connect power to the V-LAN-T and V-LAN-R units.

  85.      The above connections should result in an operational V-LAN network.
